The Review
I promise that I don't always give every movie 5 stars! It looks like every time I do a review I am giving it 5 stars, but a lot of it has to do with the fact that my review process is fairly new and I am still touching on my favorites and ones that I really liked. This movie is probably one of my all time favorites. I remembers seeing this preview when I was 10 years old and thinking to myself, "Man I would really like to see this movie.". I was finally able to see int in 2003 when I got a Netflix membership. Back to the movie, this movie centers around a British high school kid that is Gay and goes through the normal trial and tribulations; bullying, isolation, crushes, and trying to come out and express his feelings. He cruises a park after school to apparently hook up with other guys, and on one of those days the guy that he sets a hook up with happens to be the school's popular jock. He is what we would consider an all American, well rounded guy. He is charming, good at sports, and comes from a very prominent family. I feel that casting for him could have been a bit better, he was good looking, but when you think of a coming of age story with a hot jock that is in the closet, you imagine a very good looking guy. I would only consider him an average to slightly above average. Anyway, the main character (Steven) develops a relationship with John (the jock) and the movie takes the coming of age style story with the problems one would expect; the difficulty of living in the closet, wanting to be "real", continuing a relationship while hiding it from everyone, and finally Steven trying to navigate a relationship with John. Steven has a very funny best friend (Linda) who he discloses all of his secrets to and it slowly follow's her small story within the film. This movie gets 5 stars because when you are watching it you feel you are watching a very well-produced Hollywood movie. The cinematography is very good, I don't feel that at any point there was a flaw in the production or cinematography that lead me to believe it wasn't a well produced film. The story was very strong and easy to follow. You were able to develop good relationships with the characters and, the actors did a great job at playing those parts. They were very good and I would say that it was one of the best Gay movies from a acting/directing/production stand point. This is a great coming of age movie and it is worth the watch. I think after you watch it, it will be one of your favorites too.
